Naples Day 3 – A Sunny Day Pompeii and Beyond

Today started with perfect weather. From the balcony of our B&B, we could see the majestic Mount Vesuvius standing tall in the distance. After a leisurely breakfast under the morning sun, we headed off to Pompeii.

Traveling from Naples to Pompeii is incredibly convenient. We took a train, and while the ticket price has risen from €2.8 last year to €3.3 this year, it remains affordable. Jie purchased entry tickets online for €23 each, only to discover upon arrival that we still needed to queue to exchange them. Meanwhile, buying tickets on-site costs only €18! A word of advice: do not buy tickets online in advance—it’s a bit of a rip-off. Thankfully, we saved money by skipping the paid audio guide. Instead, we downloaded the free Pompei Visit App, which provided excellent audio guidance with just a pair of earphones. This made up for the €5 we “lost.”

Pompeii, buried by Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in AD 79, is remarkably well-preserved. We spent three fascinating hours exploring the ruins.

Exiting through another gate, we found ourselves in Pompeii’s modern city—a vibrant contrast to the ancient ruins. The streets are wide, clean, and filled with boutiques, and the stunning cathedral added to the charm. After a brief stroll, we took the train from Pompeii to Montesanto in Naples.

Montesanto is a great spot to enjoy panoramic views of Naples. Although Castel Sant’Elmo, a 14th-century fortress, had already closed, the scenic night view made the visit worthwhile. We then walked to the chic Vomero district, a stark contrast to Naples’ historic center. Clean streets, modern buildings, and upscale shops create a completely different vibe.

For dinner, we chose a traditional trattoria in Vomero and enjoyed a classic Neapolitan pizza. As the birthplace of pizza, Naples has a deep connection to this world-famous dish. Created in the 18th century, the original pizza was made with simple ingredients: fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. Its humble origins have since evolved into a global culinary icon.

Since we had a late lunch, we decided not to order two pizzas for dinner. Instead, we opted for a grilled swordfish dish, which provided high-quality protein and was perfectly cooked. Despite trying to limit our carb intake, we couldn’t resist dessert. The strawberry tart, topped with vibrant wild strawberries, was simply irresistible and the perfect sweet ending to our meal.

After dinner, we took the metro back to our B&B. It was a full yet delightful day, and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds for us in Naples.
