From Winter Night to the Tropics – Welcoming the New Year in Kuala Lumpur

Street Food, Fireworks, the Beginning of a Journey

From Zero to Thirty Degrees – A Shift from Winter to the Tropics

Our flight was delayed by an hour, turning what was supposed to be a smooth journey into a late-night arrival. The cold of Shanghai still clung to us, but as soon as we stepped off the plane, Kuala Lumpur’s warm, humid air wrapped around us, making my nose a little sensitive. On this Chinese New Year’s Eve, instead of gathering around a hot meal with family, we were hauling our luggage into an entirely different tropical world.

The City That Never Sleeps – First Impressions of KL

The e-channel immigration process was incredibly smooth, and our pre-booked car was waiting for us. On the way to the hotel, we chatted with the driver and got a quick introduction to Malaysia. By the time we finally arrived at the hotel, it was already past ten.

Thankfully, we picked a great place to stay – a Service Suite, complete with a kitchen and a living room, making it feel more like a temporary home than a typical hotel room.

That being said, the downside of a suite is its sheer size – much bigger than a standard hotel room. This meant one thing: losing track of our belongings way too often.

Jalan Alor – A Feast Under the Fireworks

Hunger kicked in, but thankfully, Jalan Alor, KL’s most famous night market street, was just around the corner. By day, it looks like any ordinary street, but come nightfall, it transforms into a vibrant food paradise. Tables and plastic chairs spill onto the sidewalks, the air thick with the aromas of grilled seafood, durian, and satay. The balmy night made everything feel even more relaxed and festive.

What to eat? We simply picked a random stall and ordered a feast.

Grilled Stingray: Wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over charcoal, this dish was an explosion of smoky flavors, with tender fish meat and a slightly spicy sambal sauce.Satay: Chicken, beef, and lamb skewers, dipped in special sauce. Sweet, savory, with just the right hint of spice—a must-try Malaysian classic.

As we indulged in our late-night feast, we were surrounded by travelers from all over the world, while locals casually enjoyed their supper. In the distance, the silhouette of the KL 118 Tower stood against the sky, while fireworks continuously lit up the night, giving this tropical Chinese New Year a festive touch.

Wrapping Up Day 0

Back at the suite, the city’s night lights flickered outside, mixed with the distant thumping beats from nearby bars and the crackling of fireworks. We turned on the TV just in time for the Spring Festival Gala’s countdown, bringing a small piece of home into this tropical New Year.

The journey had just begun, but in that moment, I felt myself slowly settling into the rhythm of this city.

Perhaps the best trips are like this—not meticulously planned perfection, but a collection of unexpected, genuine surprises.
